Gonu hit Oman and now heading to Iran

I didn't buy the newspaper today. Just borrow from the McD staffs when we had our McD breakfast at Sect3 McD this morning.
Malas le nak beli sebab front page pasal the new pengantin banyak nya. Best wishes to the couple ... I've nothing against the marriage but malas le nak "derma wang tunai" to buy newspaper if that's the big news. Baca kat internet dah lah.

So while waiting for Asr, I log on to my gmail and saw a "Gonu" email from a friend/neighbour who's on posting to Oman. Apparently the cyclone has hit Oman on Friday and I don't recall seeing anything about this in our local paper (too busy with the couple's wedding news).
If this is true, then I feel sad because the last time a disaster struck our neighbour (it was an earthquake+tsunami hitting south Bandung, Jawa, Indonesia) the disaster news was also take lower priority compared to A Celebrity wedding press conference. Or may be it's just me missing the news, I hope the latter is true.

Anyway, here's the Gonu Tuesday update. By now it has also hit Iran with a number of death toll.

June 5: Stronger than normal waves come ashore at Muscat, Oman, as Cyclone Gonu approached the Arab nation.
MUSCAT, Oman — Officials ordered thousands of people to evacuate low-lying areas along the Persian Gulf Tuesday in anticipation of the onslaught of the strongest cyclone to hit the Arabian Peninsula in 60 years.

Cyclone Gonu hit Oman's eastern coastal towns of Sur and Ra's Al-Hadd with wind speeds up to 106 miles and waves up to 12 yards high, according to the country's civil defense.

The cyclone, which had been churning northwest through the Indian Ocean, dropped heavy rains on the capital, Muscat, and other nearby towns, the civil defense said in a statement.

Gonu had weakened by midday to a Category Three-strength storm, was expected to make landfall in southern Iran, a region never hit by a storm of this magnitude, FOX News weather forecaster Janice Dean reported.

Gonu has the potential to drop a year's worth of rain on Iran in a single day, Dean said.

The story of Bawang Merah Bawang Putih unfolds in the present day, but takes a moral message from the original, famous Indonesian folktale.

Bawang Merah Bawang Putih is about two pretty girls, who are neighbors and study at the same school. Alya is a diligent student who plays the character of Bawang Putih in the opera of Bawang Merah Bawang Putih, while Siska plays Bawang Merah. They are known as Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih in their school because the opera was a big success. As teenagers, their school life is full of romance. Bawang Merah hangs out with her gang, Tia, Lani and some others. And Alya hangs out with her friends, Rita, Eli and some others.

Siska lives with her mother, Rika, who is divorced from her father. Her father is in jail because of corruption, so they live in affliction. Alya lives happily with her parents. Her father Indra, is a successful businessman, while Yasmin, her mother, is a friendly housewife.

Siska's character as Bawang Merah in the opera continues in her life. Bawang Merah and her mother are jealous of Bawang Putih's life. Rika and Siska are very good at acting so Alya and her mother don't realize that Siska and her mother resent them.

When Ferdi, a new student, falls in love with Bawang Putih, Siska starts to hate Bawang Putih more each day. Ferdi actually comes from a rich family, but he ran away from home and lives simply in Jakarta, because he cannot stand his father who is very strict. Bawang Merah tries so many ways to separate Ferdi and Bawang Putih. Meanwhile, Rika tries so many ways to destroy Yasmin's family. Rika acts so good that Yasmin treats her, not as a neighbor, but as a sister. Yasmin always helps her, especially when it comes to money.

Finally, Rika has a chance to poison Yasmin, and she dies. Before her death, she gets the chance to tell her daughter to be careful of Rika, but Bawang Putih gets the message wrong. She thinks that her mother asks her to take Rika into her life after her mother died.

Rika keeps trying to win Indra until finally they get married and she moves in to his house with her daughter. After this, Bawang Putih lives in agony and suffering. But her agony doesn't make her change. She takes her suffering with patience so God blesses her.

She makes friends with a fairy that no one can see. There is no eternal crime. Goodness finally overcomes evil. Finally Bawang Putih lives happily, while Bawang Merah and her mother pay for their past actions.

It does come from the heart, trust me !

A long lost friend , PPP's "APA KHABAR?" email pop up in my mailbox the week after Raya.
It is not such a wonder in today's virtually connected world, where everything is at the tip of our fingers. A few forwarded emails and with the help of the Tetikus scrolling up and down, familar text come to vision. With a "one-in-a-million" name like mine, it is a safe bet. But still one can never be too sure. Further clicks away ... the email reach my proxy mailbox which later is auto-forwarded to my active mailbox.
To the unbelieving eyes, the window session is refresh a few times and the "IT HELPDESK" in me, even restart the computer , not once but twice, ... just to make sure what's read is for real.

All the meaningful coincidences in life ... starting a friendship, cherishing it, lapsing on it and the awareness that out there, after all these years, somewhere thoughtful friends do exist ...

Yes ... in life we do welcome some sweetener every now and then. And what can be sweeter than a friendship extended from the heart !

* PPP - Personal & Private person, it's not People Progressive Party wokey !
pssttt : what i recalled mostly about PPP is the handwriting - i always thought PPP write like a typewriter - very very very neat !

31st July 2006

Today is the day , that is yet another major milestone in my working chapters.

My 2 friends, who happen to be my ONLY staffs, are leaving the M** under the Separation Scheme.

So what does this mean to me ?
Food wise - eat eat eat !!! We hv series of farewells (read eat-eat) in the last 5 days. The group farewell at Paya Serai, then I** Durian & Rambutan feast, then The Division farewell with really good Thai Food on Friday. And this morning, the office Nasi Dagang & Cake eat-eat.
Personally, for them, I am happy and wish them all the best. Yes RMMMM (and lots of RM) does not guarantee happiness, but RMMMM (and lots of RM) does give room to pursue other interests in life. And it does give room for some "peace of mind".
And there are opportunities if they want to pursue other careers, within the same line or different line.

Work wise ---- I will be the one doing the 3 persons job, with the help of one contract staff. So what will that mean to me .... ha ha ha ... ask me in a month time.

Oh well ... wish me luck ... and I think I better start my "ganti puasa" .
